 STATEHOUSE STATEMENT

PRESIDENT TINUBU DIRECTS EFCC TO VACATE THE COURT ORDER FREEZING OSUN GOVERNMENT ACCOUNT 

 

It has come to my notice that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained a court order on August 5, 2026, freezing the accounts of the Osun State Government. I must state that I feel deeply embarrassed not by the EFCC's exercise of its mandate backed by a court order, but by the timing of the agency's action. This is so because every action taken by an institution of State, especially at the Federal level, is always credited to me, as the President, even when I may not have had any prior knowledge of the action.

Since assuming office, I have consistently maintained that anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies must be allowed to discharge their statutory responsibilities independently, professionally, without fear or favour, or political interference. I have therefore deliberately refrained from directing or interfering in the operational activities of the EFCC or any other investigative or prosecutorial agency because I firmly believe that strong democratic institutions, operating within the confines of the law, are indispensable to democratic good governance and the rule of law.

As President, I am committed to allowing institutions of State to function and take any action they consider necessary in the interest of proper governance without the need for any prior approval.  Indeed, that is why institutions are set up by law with clearly defined powers.    While I am yet to be fully apprised of the facts which informed the action of EFCC in approaching the court to obtain the said order freezing the Osun State Government account, I am not in the slightest doubt that the timing of the action of EFCC is inauspicious, and therefore I feel compelled to intervene. 

Osun State is only a few days away from its gubernatorial election. Therefore, nothing ought to be done to give an impression that the EFCC or indeed any other agency of the federal government is being used to interfere with the election.

 

Based on the foregoing premise, I am duty-bound to issue a directive on this issue in consonance with the overriding public interest in preserving public confidence and the integrity, credibility, and fairness of our democratic process. 

 

Accordingly, I have directed the EFCC to immediately proceed to the court to vacate the order and discontinue whatever action it has instituted against the Osun State Government in this regard. 

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

We are repeatedly told that painful reforms require patience. We are told that fuel subsidy removal and the floating of the naira were necessary sacrifices to save the economy. Fair enough. Every serious nation has, at one point or another, asked its citizens to make difficult sacrifices in pursuit of long-term stability.

*_But every successful reform in history has been built on one principle: shared sacrifice._*

*So I ask a simple question: what exactly has the political class sacrificed?*

The Nigerian people have a long list.

They now buy fuel at several times what they used to pay. Food prices have soared. Transport costs have skyrocketed. Electricity tariffs have increased for many consumers. Businesses are struggling with higher operating costs, while the value of salaries and pensions has been eroded by inflation.

Every Nigerian family can point to something they have lost.

Can the political class do the same?

If these reforms are truly about national survival, where is the evidence that those who designed them have also tightened their belts?

_Which constitutional privileges have they surrendered?_

_Which unnecessary luxuries have they abolished?_

_Which bloated political offices have they eliminated?_

_Which convoys have they reduced?_

_Which allowances have they voluntarily forfeited?_

_Which fleets of luxury vehicles have they cancelled?_

_Which extravagant foreign trips have they stopped?<

*_Which symbols of excess have they abandoned to tell Nigerians: "We are in this together."_*

*Instead, what many citizens continue to see is an expanding political bureaucracy, expensive government lifestyles, lavish official ceremonies, and billions appropriated for the comfort of public office holders, while ordinary Nigerians are repeatedly told to endure more pain because prosperity is just around the corner.*

That is not merely an economic contradiction; it is a moral one.

Governments do not earn public trust simply by publishing impressive macroeconomic statistics. They earn it when citizens can visibly see that their leaders are carrying the heavier burden.

Leadership is not asking people to suffer.

Leadership is suffering first.

If subsidy removal was inevitable, then the first subsidy that should have disappeared was the subsidy on political extravagance.

If austerity was necessary, then austerity should have started at the top.

The tragedy of this administration is not only that Nigerians have been asked to sacrifice. It is that many believe the sacrifices have been demanded almost exclusively from the governed, while the governing class has largely insulated itself from the consequences of the very policies it champions.

No reform can command lasting legitimacy when the pain is socialised but the comfort remains exclusive.

*Nigerians are not merely asking whether these reforms were necessary.*

They are asking a deeper question:

_Who has really paid the price?_
